Site Prep Checklist

Interior of a steel building before the slab is poured

A little prep on your end makes a big difference on ours. Most delays on building jobs come from things that could have been sorted out ahead of time: a gate too narrow for the truck, a buried line nobody marked, a permit still waiting at the county office.

Use this checklist in two parts. The first part is for before we come out for your site review. The second is for the days leading up to install.

Before Your Site Review

Pick a Spot, Then a Backup

  • Choose where you want the building and think about a second option
  • Walk the area and look for slope, soft or wet ground, and rock
  • Note where water flows after a hard rain
  • Look up for power lines and overhanging tree limbs

Know Your Property Lines and Setbacks

  • Find your property lines or survey pins if you have them
  • Ask your county or town about setbacks from lines, roads, and other buildings
  • Check HOA rules if you have an HOA
  • Note septic tanks, drain fields, and well locations, and keep the building clear of them

Start on Permits Early

  • Call your county building and zoning office and ask what they need
  • Ask whether you need engineered drawings (we can provide them)
  • Write down any fees, forms, or inspections they mention

Our permit help page has a list of questions to ask.

Have Your Ideas Ready

  • What you want to store, park, or do inside
  • Rough size and door locations
  • Any add-ons you are considering, like lean-tos or aprons

Our size guide and add-ons page can help.

Before Install Day

Call 811

  • Call 811 (or use your state’s online request) a few business days before any digging
  • This is free, and it gets public utility lines marked
  • Private lines, like a line from your house to a shed or a well, may not be marked by 811, so flag those yourself or have them located

Clear the Way for Delivery

  • Make sure a large delivery truck can reach the site
  • Check gate widths, low branches, tight turns, soft ground, and bridges or culverts
  • Move vehicles, trailers, and equipment out of the path
  • Think about where the truck can turn around

Clear and Level the Site

  • Remove brush, stumps, and debris from the building area, plus some working room around it
  • Mow tall grass
  • Talk with us about leveling. We do site prep, and we will tell you during the review what we will handle and what we need from you

Power for the Crew

  • Have a working outdoor outlet within reach of the site if possible
  • If there is no power nearby, let us know ahead of time

Make the Site Safe

  • Keep pets inside or penned during install
  • Keep kids well away from the work area, trucks, and equipment
  • Let neighbors know if the truck may block a shared drive for a while

Have Your Paperwork Handy

  • Permit posted or ready if your county requires it
  • Your quote and building order so you can double-check doors and options

After the Pour, Before the Building

If we are pouring your concrete, give it time. Keep vehicles and heavy loads off the new slab until we say it is ready. Do not let anyone drive across the edges.

Questions Before You Start?

If something on this list does not fit your property, just ask. Call or text 276-235-1191 or reach us through the contact page. You can also read what to expect on install day.

Common Questions

Do I need to call 811 before a metal building install?

Yes, call 811 before any digging. It is free and gets public utility lines marked. Private lines may not be marked, so flag those yourself or have them located.

Does the site need to be perfectly level?

We handle site prep and will tell you during the site review what leveling we will do and what we need from you. Concrete foundations also help with a level base.

What does the delivery truck need?

A clear path wide enough for a large truck, with no low branches, tight turns, or soft ground, and space to turn around.

Do I need power for the install?

A working outdoor outlet near the site helps the crew. If you do not have power nearby, tell us ahead of time.
