Sometimes you do not need four walls. You just need a roof that keeps sun, sap, hail, and snow off your car, camper, or boat. That is what a steel carport or RV cover does, and it is one of the simplest ways to protect what you have already paid for.
We are a family-run metal building and concrete contractor based in Southwest Virginia. We can handle the site review, prep, and install, and we can pour concrete under your carport if you want a finished floor.
Carport or RV Cover?
They are built the same way. The difference is height and length.
Standard Carports
Sized for cars, trucks, mowers, and side-by-sides. Good for a driveway spot, a covered parking pad, or a place to keep firewood dry.
RV and Boat Covers
Taller legs and longer frames for campers, travel trailers, motorhomes, and boats on trailers. The most important number here is height. Measure your RV to its highest point, including the A/C unit, antenna, or anything else on the roof. For a boat, measure to the top of the windshield, tower, or motor while it sits on the trailer. Then leave room to spare. Our size guide has tips on clearance.
Open, Partly Closed, or Enclosed
Carports start fully open. Many customers add a gable end or side panels to block blowing rain and snow while still keeping it airy. If you end up wanting walls all the way around, you are really looking at an enclosed garage, and that changes a few things about payment options, which we cover below.
Roof Styles
A vertical roof sheds rain and snow best and is the most common choice overall. On a carport, a boxed-eave or regular roof can also make sense, especially in milder areas or on shorter buildings where cost is a bigger factor. We will walk you through the trade-offs for your site.
Ground, Gravel, or Concrete
A carport can sit on several kinds of surfaces. Concrete gives you a clean, solid floor and a strong base for anchoring. If you want a slab, we pour it. We set footers below local frost depth and pour a typical 4-inch slab, and the concrete is quoted separately from the carport. See our concrete page for how we do it.
Whatever the base, anchoring matters. Open carports catch wind like a sail, so they need to be tied down right for your ground and your local wind conditions. Our buildings can be certified for local wind and snow loads, and engineered drawings are available.
Important: Carports and Rent-to-Own
Open carports are not eligible for our rent-to-own program, and the rent-to-own discount does not apply to them. That program is for enclosed buildings only. If you need financing flexibility, ask us whether an enclosed building would work for what you have in mind. You can still lock in your quoted price with a 15 percent deposit, which holds that price until spring.
A Few Practical Tips
- Leave room to open truck doors and walk around the vehicle, not just park it
- Think about the angle you will back a camper or boat in from
- Check overhead power lines and tree limbs before you pick the spot
- Make sure the delivery truck can get to the site (see our site prep checklist)
- Ask your county whether a carport needs a permit where you live

Common Questions
Are carports eligible for rent-to-own?
No. Open carports are not eligible for our rent-to-own program or its discount. Rent-to-own is for enclosed buildings. You can still lock your quoted price with a 15 percent deposit.
How tall should an RV cover be?
Measure your RV to its highest point, including the A/C unit and antenna, then add room to spare for clearance. We will help you pick a leg height that fits.
Can you pour a concrete pad under my carport?
Yes. We pour footers below local frost depth and a typical 4-inch slab. Concrete is quoted separately from the carport.
Can I add sides to a carport later?
Often you can add gable ends or side panels. Ask us when you order so we can plan for it.
