Massachusetts is one of the farthest states we serve from our base in Southwest Virginia. We travel for the right job and will tell you straight if yours makes sense. Call or text with your town.
From the Berkshires to the Cape
Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires get heavy snow and cold. Central Mass sees plenty of snow too. Eastern Mass and Cape Cod face nor’easters, coastal wind, and salt air. Freeze-thaw is a constant across the state, and rocky soil is common.
Snow load and wind both matter here. Every building we sell is certified for local wind and snow loads, with engineered drawings available. A vertical roof is our top pick for snow shedding.
What people build in Massachusetts
- Detached garages for homes on small lots
- Workshops and hobby barns
- Boat storage on the South Shore and Cape
- Small farm buildings and horse barns
- Equipment storage for contractors
Foundation planning
Deep frost and rocky ground mean footers need careful planning. Our turnkey service covers site review, prep, footers below frost depth, a 4-inch slab, and the building install. Learn about our concrete process.
Town requirements
Massachusetts towns usually require building permits for accessory buildings, and local zoning sets size, height, and setback rules. Conservation commissions may get involved near wetlands. Call your town building department before you order.
Lock your price, then permit
Permits in Massachusetts can take time. A 15% deposit locks your quoted building price until spring, so you can work through the town process without worrying about steel and fuel costs going up. Enclosed buildings also qualify for rent-to-own with 15% down, payments about 25% lower than typical rent-to-own programs, and 90 days same as cash from delivery. Open carports are not eligible.
Before hiring any building company, check their Facebook and Google reviews, confirm they have been in business more than a couple of years, and watch for signs of fake reviews.
Small lots are common in eastern Massachusetts, so building size is often decided by setbacks rather than what you want to store. Get those numbers from your town first.
